Lindsay from Glenarm

Looking for the family of Margaret Lindsay who married John McCauley/Macauley/McAuley from Ballycraigy, Larne in 1875 at Glenarm Pres. Church. Margaret was the daughter of William Lindsay a shoemaker from Glenarm.

John was a seaman and by the time of their first child William Neill Macauley (as spelt on birth cert) the family were living Cosgrove St, Belfast (docks area).

Margaret died at Glenarm 22 Mar 1905 and was buried in the Lindsay family plot at St Patricks C.o.I.

John McAuley is in my tree. He died 4/4/1894 -- according to coroner. Was sailor, found drowned River Lagan, Donegal Quay -- see here https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1894/05969/4696883.pdf

What is your link to the McAuley's.-- He was my great-great uncle

Hi I remember Jimmy Lindsay living and working as a shoemaker in Altmore St Glenarm in the sixties If I remember correctly my GGandfather lived in that house prior to moving to Toberwine st in 1900 approx contact Ian Bradley of Crumlin or any Bradley in Glenarm for details

Do Bradley's now live in the house you speak of or are they related to the Lindsays?

I have found 2 Bradleys at no's 31 and 33, The Cloney, Glenarm.

just found this site and lo and behold your ancestors lived in our family's old home ! The shoemaker you remember from the 60's must have been my grandad Robert John Lindsay 'Bobby' to all and sundry. He had lived at that address for many years he was married but his wife died in the flu epidemic after W.W.1. when my Aunty Mary was a baby. He had four children Elinor ( Nora) who was a teacher and married Hugh McKay, Martha (Rotha) who married Charles Cooper and emigrated to Australia in the 1950's and Mary who married Johnnie Mills ( dead now ) but in his day well known for his fiddle playing. Their ofspring still live in the Larne area. The fourth and only boy being my dad. After my grandma died my Aunt Agnes Brown looked after the children and was fondly remembered by my dad and us kids as 'Granny Aggie' Bless her.
Don't know if this is any help to you or the other chap, Lawrence was it ? but the names Mary, Margaret, Hester seem to crop up with great regularity as do Robert, John, William and David even George. My great grandfather Lindsay was married twice and Grandad had a half
brother also called John who was the Glenarm postman for many years but never married.

Thanks for the info. I am interested in the McAuley side of the Glenarm Lindsay family. John McAuley (Macauley) from Ballycraigy, Larne married Margaret Lindsay (daughter of William, a Glenarm shoemaker) in 1875 Glenarm C.O.I. They had a son William Neill Macauley (b. Oct 1876 and went to live in Belfast at the docks (Cosgrove St) where John was a sailor. I wish to find out about this family as I have no further details. Margaret Lindsay died March 1905 and was buried in the Lindsay plot at St Patrick's Glenarm - do you know anything of her or her family or could point me in the direction of a relative who may know something?

John McAuley may have drowned around 1895 at Belfast (this may have accounted for his wife having been buried in the Lindsay family plot at Glenarm).

thanks for your reply sorry about delay, computer problems using a friend's. Most of my older relatives have died but my aunty Mary Mills used to live in Antiville Larne but she would be about 80/90 yrs. old now. She had sons, Freddy, Bobby and George Mills who may remember the olds reminisences, as I did, but I don't know as I lost touch when I moved here. ( Norfolk ) Either ways as Margaret Lindsay was my great grandfathers sister I guess that makes you my cousin ( umpteen times removed ) so Hi.new cousin nice to know you.

I had sort of worked out that it was the McAuley you are looking for. I may not have had any info to help you out but inadvertantly you have helped me as I have been trying to join the dots between William and Ann Lindsay and their children down to my own mum and dad. Of course your McAuley was one of those people. Thank you for that and if you do decide to follow up on the Lindsay connection anytime anything I find out is yours for the asking. You can find me on finnsholm@btinternet.com for the present at least. Anything further back than 1851 may be down to Shay, my son, I will most likely have gone insane (or senile !) by then. I tend to get side tracked by associated names so if a McAuley comes up I will remember that you are looking.

do you have Alexander and Samuel McAuley living at cosgrove st. belfast and a margaret Macauley, the spelling is different, in botanic st. 1901 is this, lots of greats, Aunt Margaret ?
